How To Become the Best You Can Be

When we speak of childhood memories, people tend to think of a bunch of crayons, doodled walls and scribbled papers.  Ah, he/she’ll grow up to be an artist, they say. But what if that wasn’t the beginning? What if we were never presented with the concept of a crayon, or color. What if a child was never told what a circle was or what painting within the lines was? What if a person grew up understanding a word differently than the rest of the crowd, and grew up to be one of the most famous writers we know?

Taking different paths is what individualize us. We do what we do because we have experienced, were nurtured, and understood the world differently. Every decision we make, moves us towards a better version ourselves than the one before. We work towards becoming the “me” we envision ourselves to be.

So, how do we make a conscious decision to keep doing that and not stray?

Be mindful

If you’re not aware of what makes you tick & what doesn’t, how are you supposed to address it? So, be as aware of your presence and your surroundings as possible. Observe and transform ideas. Mindfulness will help you own yourself. Only then will you be able to consciously take charge of what path you choose and of the consequences you face.

Be open

Making up your mind can be both good and bad. Being decisive can help with getting things started, while being stubborn can elicit the exact opposite effect. So be open-minded and be open to possibilities. Open-mindedness brings perspectives into our lives, which result in creativity.

Embrace diversity

Collect experiences as if you were picking the perfect combination of flowers to put together a bouquet. No new skill learned results in time wasted. If you get the opportunity to learn something new, even if it’s not necessarily your cup of tea, sip it. You don’t have to drink it to the bottom, but give it a shot and make the most of what it offers you. You never know how it may come in handy. So, invest in diversity!

Live positively

Be passionate with the right attitude. Emotions are something that can fuel us to our greatest extents, however, they can also be the primal reasons that keep us from reaching that very extent.
A wise man once said that there are two wolves in all of us. One that is caring and the other, full of hatred. When asked, which one do we end up becoming, he responded, the one you feed the most.

So let your mindfulness guide you to being compassionate towards others, but most importantly towards yourself.

On this note, watch this immensely inspirational TED talk to get yourself binging on the importance of your part in your life.

Acknowledge ignorance

…no not by accepting it, but by addressing it. If you realize that you are, or may have been ignorant towards something earlier; instead of jumping to defend your ego, mitigate  its negative connotation by learning more. Even for the the saying “ignorance is bliss” to be true, you must admit to a certain aspect and only then make a conscious decision to give it a blind eye.

So please, cultivate yourself as much as you can, because in-perspective, no one else will. As the writer in the article “Release your inner genius with these 5 tips,” puts it, “Learn, Unlearn & Relearn.”
