A Flower in the Desert

A Flower in the Desert started out as a “mini magazine” that Gail Marlene Schwartz, Artist In Residence in Spring of 2013, dreamed up. Initially it was a daily email that went out to a list of contacts that she had compiled, but after explaining the Projects section of our website, she gladly allowed us to put her daily installments here as a repository of her time at Starry Night and a record of her wonderful project. Below is her introductory email and the mini magazine installments in order. Enjoy…

Hello friends,

On Thursday, I am off on a big adventure at the Starry Night Artist Retreat in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico for 2 weeks. One of my projects while there will be producing a cyber ‘zine called “A Flower in the Desert” that I will send by email daily. The content will include a picture (small format low resolution but hopefully still visually pleasing) and a short text of 5 sentences or less (as usual, I am working on concision!)

What you will receive will be spare, economical, and hopefully as delightful as spotting a real flower in the desert might be. Taking an especially delicious breath of air… making brief eye contact with a baby… finding your favourite earrings in the ginger jar when you thought they were lost… this is the type of mundane pleasure I’m aiming to give you readers for this project.

If you’d rather not receive these, just let me know and I’ll take you off the list. Otherwise, look forward to receiving the first installation on February 15th!

Love to you all,

Gail
