Allison Janae Hamilton

4

A visual artist and scholar based in New York, Hamilton’s work lives at the intersections of photography, fashion, and performance. Hamilton’s artistic practice centers on the fantastic in order to agitate rigid narratives of blackness existing in today’s visual culture landscape. She currently is a 2013-2014 Fellow at the Whitney Independent Study Program, sponsored by the Whitney Museum of American Art. Regarding her upcoming collections, she says,

“In my portraits, I use fantasy as a technology to probe (and often agitate) narratives of blackness existing in today’s visual culture landscape. I evoke the canons of speculative fiction, surrealism, and classical portraiture in order to explore the tensions between dominant cultural narratives and self-identification.”

Shelly Hanan

Shelly discovered her passion of photography at a very young age. Inspired by a Brownie camera, she advanced to graduating in Fine Art Photography from the Humboldt State University, CA. She later continued her studies at the State University of New York, where she gained her teaching certificate in Art Education. Her collection of works for the upcoming exhibition depict places that have begun to change; places that are deconstruction or simplifying.

Thomas Howard

6

A man of powerful words and highly expressive art works, Howard explains,

“When I noticed my inclination towards art, I gravitated to architect Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as Salvador Dali. As a child, my eyes always admired feats of architecture. I was fascinated by dimension and geometry, and craved a dwelling I could call my own. When I reached adolescence, I was introduced to Dali’s work. What intrigued me about his paintings is how realistically executed they are despite being fictitious. Now, I am predominantly inspired by the images that appear in my conscious mind or in my dreams.”
